DABBAWALAS' UNIQUE SUPPLY CHAIN MODEL

Guys this is a very interesting article by Veda Kisara and Kopal Garg from NMIMS

Unique Supply Chain which does not uses any software for operating
Millions in Mumbai commute everyday to earn a living. Banks, colleges, hospitals, government offices, private offices, factories and ports are all spread across different parts of the city. In a country where hot and freshly cooked home food is the most preferred for consumption, carrying of lunch boxes is a big burden for the working populace. However, this problem is unheard of in this metro city thanks to the presence of the 100 year old organization of “Dabbawalas”.

The Dabbawala community has about 5000 people working with them. These Dabbawalas deliver lunch boxes for about 2 lakh people at their work places on time. The work doesn’t end here. They also carry the empty lunch boxes back to the homes of the customers. The unbelievable part is they make only one mistake in sixteen million transactions and have been consistently good at it for all the time of their operations. This credibility earned them a six sigma designation by the Forbes magazine and ISO 9001 accreditation.  The three main reasons for their success are as follows.

1. Supply Chain Management
Surprisingly there is no use of Information systems or technology for their Supply chain side. A rigorous level of practice over the years has led to the unwritten steps to follow for accurate supply chain management and time precision. There are about 40000 transactions (delivery and return) of lunch boxes taking place daily.

The figure below shows their Supply chain model.

* Dabbawalas use cycles or go by foot to every household. The waiting time to collect a lunch box is maximum 2 minutes.
* Every Dabbawala has to assemble at his/her reported collection point at sharp 9. 30 am.
* From these collection points they assemble at the nearest railway station which is the Aggregation point.
* The next mode of transport is the trains where the carriers containing lunch boxes are transported to the destination railway stations.
* From every Destination station the dabbas are carried over carts, cycles and carriers to the destination zones which are given a specific number.
* From these zones, the lunch boxes are carried to the offices or workplaces which reach by lunchtime
* From here the reverse process of delivering the empty lunch boxes back to homes starts
* All through the above process, there is no slack at any point of time
* Traffic Jams, pedestrians, delays in train and signals do not stop the functioning. The trademark white cap wore by these Dabbawalas are known to everyone including the police who don’t interfere in their process

2. Coding System

Coding System is meticulously followed in order to avoid any mistakes involving interchange of lunch boxes, that is, wrong Tiffin box reaching the customer.

As given in the above Diagram, the Coding system can be explained as follows:

* BVI: Borivali, a suburb in Mumbai. This denotes the residential station
* 9 RC 14: Code for Dabbawalas at destination. This user code is different for each customer
* RC: Raheja Chambers, name of a building or office
* 14: Floor Number
* E: Code for Dabbawala at Destination station. For example, E is a code for Nariman Point, Churchgate
* Jain: Name/Surname of the customer

3. Employees

All the employees or Dabbawalas are the stakeholders in this organization. This is the source of their motivation. Most of the employees are illiterate and rest is school dropouts. However they are literate enough to understand the codes and comprehend which lunch box belongs where. They are given basic idea about writing the alphabets and numbers on the boxes on joining the organization. Every Dabbawala takes about 3 hours for completing his assignment and has to cover 60-70 km on foot, carts, cycles and carriers combined. Alcohol consumption is strictly avoided during work hours. The employees’ monthly salary is about Rs.6000 per month.

Key Features of the Dabbawalas organization:

* Organization Turnover is about Thirty Six Crores annually
* Uninterrupted and on time service delivered even in occasions of bad weather and transportation/traffic problems
* Dabbawalas are well used to the local areas where they are functioning and make use of short cuts to save time
* No error inspite of lunch boxes changing hands six times
* During the working hours, they do not take a break or rest and thus no slack is present in the system
* They do not use vehicles which require fuel which makes them 0% Fuel reliant
* They do not use any modern technology for carrying out the logistics
* There are no disputes between the employees and no presence of any union
* Unique organization with Six Sigma designation and 99.99% rate of performance
* Cost of Service per lunch box = Rs. 450 per month and is standard price for all
* Customer Satisfaction accounts 100% with utmost trust

Mobile Advertising Trends

One of the quickest growing industries in the world is that of mobile advertising. It is estimated that spending for mobile advertising will reach $4 billion across the globe this year. Five mobile advertising trends have been outlined by GigaOM recently.

Better Behavior Targets
Mobile advertisers are using traditional ad targeting methods such as a demographic group or context and devices. Within the next five years, mobile advertising will be able to display ads on phones based on the person’s behavior and their current location. Mobile advertising companies have already released some beta programs, one of which has reached 70 percent success level off the bat.

Larger Search for Mobile
One of the biggest reasons for advertising spending is the feature known as mobile search. The majority of mobile money made by Google comes from its mobile search features. People will continue to use mobile devices to search for products and content, with those search numbers rising rapidly in the next five years. When better targeting is employed, advertisers will be able to deliver ads that are more relevant to consumers based on location, keywords, and predictability changes.

Analytics on a Better Scale
Advertisers do not have access to measuring tools for mobile ad campaigns that they would like to see right now. Excellent guidelines have been setup by The Mobile Marketing Association and the Interactive Advertising Bureau. The guidelines are still evolving and not all mobile advertisers are playing the rules that have been established.

Improved Interaction
The majority of mobile ads on phones are delivered using text form or banners. The ads can be clicked on by consumers but do not come across as very interactive. Rich-media advertisements cost more money than text ads or banner ads, which means they are not common amongst mobile ads today. Interactive ads will be incredibly popular and widespread in five years. They will allow consumers to collapse the ad, manipulate the ad, and expand the ad however they like.

Personal Cloud
The social media world and the mobile world are already intertwined today with sites like Gowalla and Foursquare. Within the next five years, there are Stanford researchers who believe that the personal cloud will explode onto the scene. The personal cloud will contain personal data that can be accessed anywhere you go, so long as you have your phone with you. The personal cloud can be shared with any person you choose and can be used to make purchases and perform other tasks.
News, information, weather reports, social networking, search and maps are the most commonly used destinations on mobile phones today. The majority of mobile users typically utilize their browser to search for information than their downloaded applications. United States consumers prefer to use a browser for mobile banking and other secure tasks.

5 Great Ads On Indian Television

1. AXE Dark Temptation
AXE
Agency: Vegaolmos-Ponce
Advertiser: Unilever
Well when you are a toiletry brand which makes men’s perfumes and deodorants, there’s not much you can innovate. Right? Wrong!!!
What’s the next best thing to a 24 carat diamond ring that you can gift a girl to impress her without digging a hole in your pocket? Yes, Chocolates. So, Axe thought ,why not make a deodorant in Chocolate flavour. Thus, came the Axe Dark Temptation.
This commercial is bold, kinky and fun. No doubt then that this was frowned upon by the Indian Government and termed “Indecent, Vulgar and Repulsive”. But, we love it!!!
The commercial shows a guy getting transformed into a human chocolate after applying the Axe dark temptation deodorant. As he walks down the street, girls ogle over him and each one wants to take a bite of him. The background song “That’s the sweet touch of love” goes perfectly with the feel of the ad.
This ad definitely gets thumbs up from us as it’s interesting, witty & humorous and at the same time targets and caters to the right audience.
2.Pulsar 220- The fastest Indian
pulsar

Agency: Ogilvy and Mather
Advertiser: Bajaj
Bajaj has come a long way from the ‘Chetak’ to the ‘Pulsar’ and so has their advertising campaigns from the ‘Humara Bajaj ads’ to the ‘Pulsar-mania’ ones.
This commercial draws the qualities of the product it’s advertising and does it in style. Pulsar, with it’s 220 variant has in fact become the fastest bike on the Indian roads.
I like the attitude of the commercial, which is laid back, smart and at the same time confident. Nowhere does the ad show riders doing stunts or speeding or dragging their bikes.
The ad shows a Bank being looted by this guy in formals without a gun. He takes the money from the lady cashier who seems to oblige. Meanwhile the cops have almost reached the bank. Our man does not bother a bit. As the ‘I am the man’ song plays in the background he takes the money, puts a note into a child’s piggy bank and casually walks out in front of the cops and sits on his Pulsar. Revs up and zoooom. Vanish!!! The cops along with their cars and helicopters are left stranded with mouths wide open.
Now, that makes a statement and makes it without any fancy stunts.

3.Tata DoCoMo
docomo

Agency: DraftFCB Ulka
Advertiser: Tata Teleservices
Tata DoCoMo dared to enter the already over-crowded GSM space where it would have tough competition from biggies like Vodafone and Airtel. Not to mention the task ahead for advertising it was even tougher because both Vodafone and Airtel had brilliant ads running on the tele.
Idea had a faced a similar challenge. Not very sure as to how successful were they but DoCoMo has definitely made a mark.
Must say, Docomo has done a splendid job in positioning the brand and it has been ably helped by it’s commercials. Be it, the strange but interesting name ‘DoCoMo’ or the
catchy tune of the ads or the smart taglines like- ‘Do the new’ & ‘When life can change in seconds, why pay in minutes’.
4.
Vodafone/ Hutch
zoozoo

Agency: Ogilvy and Mather
Advertiser: Vodafone
When you are one of the biggest telecom service providers in the world you can easily rope in brand ambassadors like Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachan, Shah Rukh or Aamir Khan. Vodafone thought thats just so boring!!! They took creativity to a different level and brought in the faithful Pug, the cute Zoozoos and the hilarious Irfan Khan.
This is where for me the Vodafone ads have scored over Airtel. While Airtel went all out to get all celebrities from Shahrukh to Saif, from Kareena to Madhavan, from Rehman to Vidya Balan and a host of cricketers; Vodafone kept it simple. And focussed on making an impact so that the brand stays with the consumer even after he is done watching TV.
Something that was a little irritating was the viral ad campaign that Vodafone had taken up during the IPL but, then again it was on purpose.

5.
Tata Tea- JaagoRe Campaigns
Jaagore

Agency: Lowe, Lintas
Advertiser: Tata tea
How creative can you get in advertising a cup of ‘chai’? Visuals of tea gardens in Assam and Darjeeling, freshly brewed hot cuppas? That would be so clichéd, isn’t it?
To take the metaphor of waking up in the morning and awakening of one’s conscience and responsibilities is sheer brilliance. (‘Har subah sirf utho mat, jaagore’) What’s even more fascinating is the execution of this brilliant Idea. The timing of the Jaagore campaign was perfect, just before the polls. The advert asked the viewers the question “Aap sote rahoge to Desh kaise jaagega?”
It created a kind of mini-rage, atleast in the urban youth. People got themselves registered for the Voter Ids and many amongst them went and voted.
Post Elections, the latest Tata Tea Jagore campaign is against bribery with the tagline – ‘Khilana band, Pilana shuru’. I hope it creates the kind of effect the election campaign did.
